UK Open Mic

Zonic

Meet Peterborough-born UK Open Mic performer Zonic:

Zonic

Hi Zonic, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:

Do you play solo only, or also in a group?

Solo

How old are you?

33

Where were you born?

Peterborough

Where did you grow up?

Cambridge

How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)

It did not

Where are you based now, and why?

Camden. It’s my true home.

What got you into making music in the first place?

I was inspired by the soundtracks of retro video games. I used to sing along and make up lyrics to them which formed the basis of my songwriting in its early stages. Also growing up in the 90s, there were a lot of brilliantly produced pop and dance songs. I loved the sound of these songs so once technology developed, I aimed to replicate this sound by using retro synths that were popular during the 90s.

What instrument/s do you play?

Singing, DJ, Music Producer

Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?

Madonna – queen of pop, can’t beat her
Kylie Minogue

Do you write your own songs?

Yes

How many years have you been writing songs for?

25 years

What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?

It really is a natural process. Ideas will come to you when they do and you can’t force it. Songs are like flowers, they bloom when they are ready!

Why did you get into playing open mic in the first place?

It’s always fun to perform material to an audience. Plus open mics are usually very chilled and have a great atmosphere.

What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?

Go for it! If you don’t put your music out there, you never know how it will be received. Obviously, do plan ahead though to avoid disappointment and check about a night’s individual set up (for example I use a backing track and not all open mics will be able to accommodate this but then again a lot of them will!)

What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?

They’re not being enough of them! Lol! So I’m always grateful when new venues and nights are announced.

What’s the most bizarre, or fun, open mic, or gig, you’ve ever played, and why?

I couldn’t pick just one. All of them hold a place in my heart!

If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?

Yes

What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?

Financial difficulties. Sadly music does not pay enough and getting paid gigs is hard these days.

What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?

My first album! Will be exicted to finish it finally!

Do you have music on streaming? What’s you main streaming channel to send people to?

Where is the main place should people go to find out more about you?

zonic-music.com

What other sites/profiles should people go to to find out more about you?
