UK Open Mic

Ryan Sandy

Meet Indonesia-born UK Open Mic performer Ryan Sandy:

Ryan Sandy

Hi Ryan Sandy, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:

Do you play solo only, or also in a group?

Solo

How old are you?

32

Where were you born?

Indonesia

Where did you grow up?

Indonesia

How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)

I have lived for almost a decade in Bali, and I played a lot of gigs doing covers of all genres, which inspires me to write my own songs and perform my own songs.

Where are you based now, and why?

Darford, I moved to the UK last year because my wife is here.

What got you into making music in the first place?

My Dad is an excellent singer and musician; he pretty much taught me everything I know and inspired me to pursue music.

What instrument/s do you play?

Singing
Piano
Piano
Guitar
Bass
Drums
Music Producer
Beat Making

Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?

My Dad.
Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, I listened to a lot of his music growing up, and in a way, it shaped my vocal range.
Hyde from L’Arc-en-Ciel, also the singer who indirectly trains me to be a better singer
Bruno Mars, his vocal techniques, and his ability to sing a wide range of music also inspire me to broaden my range.
Freddie Mercury,
Michael Jackson,

Do you write your own songs?

Yes

How many years have you been writing songs for?

10

What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?

I still write with a pen and a book, I find it very satisfying to write down ideas, rewrite them multiple times to put the puzzle together. Even when I start the song-writing part in the DAW, I still have my book and pen next to me in case there are any changes to the lyrics.

How long have you been playing open mic nights?

5

Why did you get into playing them in the first place?

Back in Bali, I like to visit the venue where my friend plays, and when the jam session starts, I will jump on the stage with them and create a vibe. That’s how I start making connections with musicians around.

What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?

Once you are up on the stage, all the anxiety you felt before will just disappear.

What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?

Going up for the first time, it’s nerve-wrecking

What’s the most bizarre, or fun, open mic, or gig, you’ve ever played, and why?

My first open mic in London was in Colour Factory, where most of the performers are freestyle rappers. Not only I can’t rap, I also can’t freestyle. I am a rehearsed performer, I like to get it under my hand before I hit the stage, so doing a freestyle jam like that was wild. I did okay I have to say, but it surely is bizzare.

If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?

Yes

What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?

I am new to London, so it’s a bit confusing to find gigs to play.

What’s the one truth about you that people often find surprising?

That I have an incredibly high wide range of voice. And I also can sing in a gritty heavy metal way, even though I don’t look like a metal head.

What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?

I just recently released my third song for my solo project, so far I am loving this project because it’s honest and pure to what I want to say.
