UK Open Mic

Paul Silve

Meet Mexico-born, UK Open Mic performer, Paul Silve:

Paul Silve

Hi Paul Silve, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:

Do you play solo only, or also in a group?

Solo

How old are you?

24

Where were you born?

Mexico

Where did you grow up?

Mexico, Barcelona, Switzerland

How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)

I had a hard time moving on and getting used to building my life again in new places. I write a lot about my homesickness, heartbreaks, unexpressed thoughts and lessons learnt.

Where are you based now, and why?

London, because it’s the capital of music

What got you into making music in the first place?

I first started singing thanks to my dad and playing instruments later on when I wanted to start creating. Melodies and words just came naturally to me when I needed to express something.

What instrument/s do you play?

Singing, Rapping, Piano, Guitar, Ukulele

Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?

Beatles, unique
Bon Iver, soul
Frank Ocean, power
Ben Howard, feel
Novo Amor, sound
Ray Charles & Nina Simone, melody
Paul Simon, simplicity
Sufjan Stevens, Softness
Bob Dylan, Attitude

Do you write your own songs?

Yes

How many years have you been writing songs for?

7

What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?

I let it naturally come to me when I need to express something,
otherwise, I do sessions with artists I admire or a songwriter I trust she helps me let it out.

Why did you get into playing them in the first place?

It’s nice and stripped back. A way to practice the performance and stage nerves and also to showcase new material.

What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?

Have fun, but don’t get cocky.

What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?

To make everybody dance.

What’s the most bizarre, or fun, open mic, or gig, you’ve ever played, and why?

One time, I played at the Manchester Art Gallery and had so much echo and a good sound that I felt my songs even more.

If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?

Yes

What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?

Getting a manager I can trust

What’s the one truth about you that people often find surprising?

I don’t have a Spanish or French accent when I sing. Only when I speak.

What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?

a lot of stuff….
