Kadi
Meet Lewisham-born UK Open Mic performer, Kadi:
Hi Kadi, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:
Do you play solo only, or also in a group?
Solo
How old are you?
24
Where were you born?
Lewisham
Where did you grow up?
Orpington
How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)
Orpington didn’t influence my music, I’m only just now trying to understand the music scene in my area.
Where are you based now, and why?
Orpington, I’ve lived there since I was 7 years old.
What got you into making music in the first place?
I’m not sure what got me into making music, I started singing first and then I started writing songs around age 12, took a break and then picked it back up at 16 when I studied music performance. I went to study commercial songwriting and just spent that time writing a lot. I was heavily influenced by Demi Lovato and Fantasia growing up.
What instrument/s do you play?
Singing, Piano
Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?
Demi Lovato, Fantasia Barrino, Vanessa Carlton, Otis Redding, Taylor Swift, Adele, Jordin Sparks,
Do you write your own songs?
Yes
How many years have you been writing songs for?
8 years
What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?
my process changes a lot, sometimes I have a melody or I’ll have lyrics but everything ends up being written on the piano first. I’ll try sometimes to use a different instrument on Garageband but my process varies.
How long have you been playing open mic nights?
Why did you get into playing them in the first place?
I got into open mics to learn how to get comfortable on stage
What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?
I would say just do it, its’ the perfect place to practice as a performer before you get more serious gigs.
What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?
The hardest thing for me about playing open mics is actually getting on the stage. I’m not a natural performer, this part of music is a journey and I’m learning how to feel comfortable on the stage.
What’s the most bizarre, or fun, open mic, or gig, you’ve ever played, and why?
Last year I played at Barnet Summer in East London which was really nice, I think that was my first festival slot and I got to meet Rickie and Melvin (however I stupidly got their names mixed up, so that was embarrassing lol)
If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?
Yes
What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?
Marketing my music and finding the audience that will connect to my music.
What’s the one truth about you that people often find surprising?
I’m not sure to be honest haha
What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?
I’m putting out my first album project this October, I’m excited, it’s an introduction to me and who I am.
Do you have your own music video, channel or playlist you’d like to share?
Do you have music on streaming? What’s you main streaming channel to send people to?
