Julia SHNX

Meet Cagliari , Sardinia, Italy-born UK Open Mic performer, Julia SHNX:

Julia SHNX

Hi Julia SHNX, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:

Do you play solo only, or also in a group?

Solo

How old are you?

31

Where were you born?

Cagliari , Sardinia, Italy

Where did you grow up?

Cagliari – London

How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)

When you are born on an island, you develop this sense of desire and curiosity towards the world. I came to London when I was 19 because of that sense of desire.
Most of the artists I’ve been listening to were British. London inspires me with its athmosphere, in all seasons. The way I live relationships in this fast city inspires me. It’s fun, I still look for simplicity. No matter what, I sometimes still write about that desire and curiosity to discover the absurd. Other times to discover the calm, the origin.

Where are you based now, and why?

I’m based in London. As I built a new life here.

What got you into making music in the first place?

The urge to analyse a feeling or a situation.
Than the approach has evolved.

What instrument/s do you play?

Singing, Guitar, Music Producer

Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?

Martina Topley Bird – Damon Albarn – SIA – Eefje de Visser – Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Mina – Erkin Koray …. I would say artists that discover all styles of music. Mike Patton, and also Cody Chesnut. This is what pops in my mind at the moment.

What I love in artsists is the sense of freedom I perceive from them.

Do you write your own songs?

Yes

How many years have you been writing songs for?

14

What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?

It’s various. I like different approaches. Sometime with my friend we pick up words and use them as a start to develop a lyric. Often, that word becomes the centre, other times it encourages the whole meaning.

Other times (most often) has been about writing feelings down.
It can start with a melody. Or with a poem.

Than I define the structure.

And I ask a couple of people for a feedback.

Why did you get into playing them in the first place?

A friend of mine literally pushed me to the stage.

What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?

I wish I can tell you your confidence will be safe. I would lie. But I can ensure you that every time you’ll feel stronger and stronger. Every time you ll be playing. you’ll open yourself to numerous ears and eyes. Which are numerous doors.
You’ll be stronger in all the good of that word.

What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?

Being without a band.

If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?

Yes

What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?

Support of a band and Marketing/Social media part.

I wish I can work on a project with other musicians.

What’s the one truth about you that people often find surprising?

I’m good at cooking. I don’t have a driving licence.

What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?

an electronic EP, with an electronic duo called Nuova Nova. It will be out this year.

And my first Acoustic EP.
