D-max
Meet Chad-born UK Open Mic performer D-max:
Hi D-max, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:
Do you play solo only, or also in a group?
Solo
How old are you?
22
Where were you born?
Chad
Where did you grow up?
Tunisia and Ivory coast
How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)
I had artist friends. I was always singing in my room and one day they took me to a recording studio. From that day I started my career as an artist.
Where are you based now, and why?
London, for university studies but also to evolve as an artist.
What got you into making music in the first place?
The truth is the expression. I am a person who does not speak at all, but music allows me to speak, to express myself.
What instrument/s do you play?
Singing, Rapping
Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?
Dadju, Abraham Mateo, Tayc, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello, Jaon Derulo, Chris brown; MA2X, Because I really like the lyrics and melodies of their songs. Mias when I sing, many people say that I sing like Dadju. He’s my favorite singer.
Do you write your own songs?
Yes
How many years have you been writing songs for?
3 years
What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?
I sing about love, so when I want to write, I already think about the subject I want to address. I think about what I want to say to the person I love. When I find it, I look for the instrumental. When I find the instrumental, I look for the melody. When I find the melody, I start writing. I prefer to write at night.
Why did you get into playing open mic nights in the first place?
I am very shy and I never go out, my friends wanted me to find a way to make myself known, to sing and get out of my shyness.
What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?
If you’re scared, don’t worry, it’s normal, even the greatest artists feel so before going on stage. But once you’re on the stage and singing, think only of making your dream come true. At that moment, everyone will want to listen to you. Being confident is your dream.
What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?
To move. I can’t move, because I’m still so shy. But I like to move like Jason Derulo or Chris Brown.
What’s the most bizarre, or fun, open mic, or gig, you’ve ever played, and why?
One day, I forgot the lyrics to my songs. So I just made up lyrics.
If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?
Yes
What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?
The promotion.
Finding money to go to the recording studio.
Finding money to make music videos.
Establishing a strong fan base.
What’s the one truth about you that people often find surprising?
