Coos
Meet The Netherlands, Utrecht-born UK Open Mic performer, Coos:
Hi Coos, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:
Do you play solo only, or also in a group?
Solo
How old are you?
18
Where were you born?
The Netherlands, Utrecht
Where did you grow up?
The Netherlands, Utrecht
How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)
I feel like the Netherlands is very supportive of creative people. There are so many beautiful organizations here that really got me to the place where I am today. The city where I grew up also feels a bit like a nice bubble. I got to know myself as an artist without any distractions from the outside world.
Where are you based now, and why?
I still live in The Netherlands in a city called Utrecht. It is the city where I’ve always lived and that’s why it feels so special to me.
What got you into making music in the first place?
I’ve always loved writing in journals and I’ve always loved singing. When I was 13 I started playing on my dad’s guitar. I fell in love with songwriting when I realized that I could combine my passion for writing and music.
What instrument/s do you play?
Singing, Guitar, Piano
Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?
Phoebe Bridgers is my favorite artist. Her lyrics are so real and poetic at the same time. The way she transforms me into another world with her beautiful productions and specific lyrics is magical. Other influences are: Fenne Lily, Matt Maltese, Julia Jacklin, Boygenius, Lizzy Mcalpine, Lucy Dacus, Ryan Beatty, and Elliot Smith
Do you write your own songs?
Yes
How many years have you been writing songs for?
4 years
What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?
I usually start with lyrics or a concept for the song. Sometimes I write for 15 minutes straight and see what comes out of me and sometimes it just comes to me during the day. Then I start playing some chords and try to come up with melodies that fit the lyrics until I have a song. My process changes a lot. I mostly just do what feels right in the moment.
Why did you get into playing them in the first place?
I wanted to be experienced in playing live
If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?
Yes
What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?
I’m currently in the process of releasing my first EP. I just released my first song called Circles and it’s so exciting to see the good response to the song.
