Bailey Grey
Meet New Jersey, US-born UK Open Mic performer, Bailey Grey:
Hi Bailey Grey, thanks for joining us! Let’s get into it:
Do you play solo only, or also in a group?
Solo
How old are you?
24
Where were you born?
New Jersey, US
Where did you grow up?
New Jersey / New York
How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)
I saw loads of new up and upcoming musicians who I really vibed with, and gained a lot of inspiration from them. I also grew up doing musical theatre professionally as a kid, so music was always a huge part of my life.
Where are you based now, and why?
NW London! I came to Scotland to get my bachelors in MT at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Then I got my Masters at Royal Central in London. I love London so much, I just ended up staying.
What got you into making music in the first place?
Musical theatre!! Telling stories through music is the number one goal of mine. I started writing songs when I was 12 years old on my ukulele, and the love for writing never died down.
What instrument/s do you play?
Singing
Guitar
Guitar
Cello
Who would be in your top 10 musical influences, and why?
Such a tough question!! I’m influenced by a lot of artists whose styles are all over the map. Sara Bareilles, Dar Williams, The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys, Dodie, Orla Gartland, Fiona Apple, Simon and Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac. SO many, really.
Do you write your own songs?
Yes
How many years have you been writing songs for?
12
What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?
It’s always different. Sometimes the songs come from poems I write. Sometimes I come up with a catchy melody and then play around with words after. Chord structures seem to always guide whatever I’m doing as well, naturally.
How long have you been playing open mic nights?
1
Why did you get into playing them in the first place?
I found an open mic near my flat in NW London, and just kept going back every week because the vibe was so supportive and lovely.
What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?
Just GO for it. Even if not everyone in the room vibes with your stuff, there will be people who you reach in a really beautiful way. Fail big, make mistakes. Music is about the journey and the growth you find along the way. Just keep at it.
If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?
Yes
What do you currently find the hardest and biggest obstacles to moving your music career forward?
Having to afford London rent!! I’ve had to work hospitality jobs on the side, which has actually been quite fun, and a great learning experience. I do struggle to find time for my music sometimes, just because of how busy I am (and how EXPENSIVE studio time is –haha)
What’s the one truth about you that people often find surprising?
Oh man, I think I’m just a very chaotic person. There are new things about myself that even surprise me sometimes. I guess you’ll just have to find out 🙂
What’s the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?
I’m working on some new tracks with my lovely producer / friend back in Seattle. We’ll be releasing them very soon. I’ve also got a whole EP out, and some singles as well.
Do you have your own music video, channel or playlist you’d like to share?
Do you have music on streaming? What’s you main streaming channel to send people to?
