Hiran de Silva
Do you play solo only, or also in a group?
What’s the name of the group?
Lots of different combos (!)
How old are you?
Where were you born?
Where did you grow up?
How did that place influence your music? (if at all!)
Everything I learned from listening to Radio Ceylon, my mum and dad, and Beatles!
Where are you based now, and why?
London SE9. Lived in London since 18. Why? Got to live somewhere!
What got you into making music in the first place?
I was kidnapped by a bunch of sexy native girls and wasn’t allowed to leave until I made love to all of them and played some songs.
What instruments do you play?
Singing, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Percussion, Cello, Harmonica, Music Producer
Who are 3 of your top 10 musical influences, and why?
Beatles, Elvis, Hollies. Leaned music by trying to figure out the chords to Beatles songs as they came out in the 1960s. Elvis, oh yeah. Hollies and other harmony groups got me into vocal harmony.
Do you write your own songs?
How many years have you been writing songs for?
What process, or processes, do you often find yourself using when you write songs?
I don’t know. A song just appears. Like facial hair. I need to capture them on my phone or I lose it. Like hair on my head.
How long have you been playing open mic nights?
Why did you get into playing them in the first place?
I was walking along Camden High Street.
What advice would you give new performers who are just starting out playing their first open mics?
Just go for it.
What’s the hardest thing, for you, about playing open mics?
For me, it’s about picking the right material for the room, on the day, in the minute, depending on what might work.
What’s the most bizarre open mic, or gig, you’ve ever played, and why?
A customer gave me money. No, seriously. Out of appreciation for ‘bringing lovely memories’, no not to tell me to stop! Lol I have framed it.
If it’s not already, are you hoping to make music your full-time career?
What’s one truth about you that people often find surprising?
I am crazy? No, that’s obvious!
What is the most exciting project you’re working on at the moment?
It’s to do with my day job/activity. But in music, a process for teaching vocal harmony to small groups using tech.
